Wildwood Crest Sets Special Election Jan. 26

WILDWOOD CREST – The Borough of Wildwood Crest will hold a special election Jan. 26, for a referendum on Bond Ordinance No. 1222. The polls will remain open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at established polling places in all five of the borough’s regular voting districts.
Registered Wildwood Crest voters will decide if the bond ordinance appropriating approximately $2.7 million for road improvements, street utility work and construction of medians along Pacific Avenue from Morning Glory to Primrose roads should be ratified.
The bond ordinance was approved Oct. 7 by a vote of 2-1 by the Board of Commissioners.
The referendum was necessitated after a group of residents who oppose construction of medians along the northern end of Pacific Avenue submitted a revised petition opposing the ratification of the bond ordinance that was certified by the borough clerk on Nov. 16.
A previous petition submitted Oct. 23 was unable to be certified by the borough clerk, who subsequently informed the submitter on the proper procedure to make the petition compliant.
In the absence of a decision by commissioners to withdraw the petition, the governing body decided at a special meeting on Dec. 4 to call for a special election for referendum on the bond ordinance in a vote of 2-1.
State statute mandates that a call for a special election and referendum must be held not less than 40 days nor more than 60 days from the final date for withdrawal of the petition, unless a general election or municipal election is to be held not less than 40 days nor more than 90 days thereafter.
State statute also mandates that the ordinance in question will be submitted without alternation to the vote of the electors of the municipality.
