Voters, Get Set for June 7 Primary, Selection of Candidates, Committees

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE – It’s time for Republicans and Democrats in Cape May County to get prepared for the June 7 primary election. Sample ballots will be sent to the contract sender between May 24 and 27, according to County Clerk Rita Fulginiti. Voters will after that receive their ballots.
She noted, “In this election cycle we are getting lots of emails and phone calls from voters who are interested finding out or changing their party affiliation.” Twenty-one days before the election was close of registration. Persons wishing to register may contact the county Board of Elections, 10-12 W. Mechanic St., Court House.
To check registration, voters can also visit the state Department of State website: https://voter.njsvrs.com, the Voter Information page.
“It is past the deadline for voters to change party affiliation from Democrat to Republican or vice versa which was 55 days before election – April 13. Voters who are unaffiliated may go to the polls on Primary Election day and affiliate with either the Republican or Democratic Party to vote in the June 7, 2016, Primary Election,” Fulginiti stated. “This will update the voter’s registration status with his or her affiliated party (which can be later changed via completing a voter registration form found at www.capemaycountyvotes.com),” she added.
May 31 is the deadline for the County Clerk to receive applications for mail-in ballots to be processed by mail.
Beginning June 1 voters may appear in person at the County Clerk’s Office or appoint a messenger to appear with his or her valid photo identification and the voter’s completed mail-in ballot application. A messenger may be a family member or registered voter and may not be a candidate in the current election.
A messenger is limited to serving in this capacity for up to three ballots.
The County Clerk’s Office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with special Saturday hours June 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The deadline to apply in person for a ballot is June 6 at 3 p.m.
Both Democratic and Republican County Committee candidates with four-year terms are on the ballot in each of the 127 election districts in Cape May County.
The clerk is expecting some personal choice or “write in” candidates to qualify for the post in those districts where “no petition was filed.”
A qualifying candidate is one who has at least the number of votes as signatures needed for a petition in the Primary, has the highest number of votes and accepts the nomination by signing a Certificate of Acceptance and Oath of Allegiance in the municipal clerk’s office within seven days.
Sample ballots are posted at: http://www.capemaycountyvotes.com/2014-ballots/.
