There’s a primary election June 3 for 26,671 Republicans and 13,621 Democrats.
According to the Cape May County election departments’ website: www.capemaycountyvotes.com as of April 22, there were also 27,543 “other” registered voters. Considered unaffiliated, they could cast ballots, but by so doing, they are considered affiliated with that party, and may vote only on that party’s ballot.
Republican freeholders Kristine Gabor and Will Morey have no opposition, from either inside the party or from Democrats, who fielded no candidates.
Similarly, Republican Sheriff Gary Schaffer has no challengers from within or without.
U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd) is being challenged by one from within his party, Mike Assad.
For the congressional seat, Democrat William J. Hughes, Jr. and David H. Cole are vying for their party’s nod to run against the incumbent. Democrats will also select two, two-year seats for county committee.
For the U.S. Senate seat presently held by Democrat Cory Booker, there are none from within his party and four Republicans: Jeff Bell, Brian D. Goldberg, Richard J. Pezzullo, and Murray Sabrin.
Municipal races will round out the ballot:
Dennis Township, two, three-year seats on township committee.
Lower Township, all three wards, one council member each for four years.
Middle Township, one, three-year committee seat.
North Wildwood, Ward 1, one, three-year council seat. Ward 2, one, three-year council seat. Ward 2, one, one-year, unexpired term.
Stone Harbor, two, three-year council members.
Upper Township, one, three-year township committee seat.
Woodbine, one mayor, four years, and two, three-year council seats.
Polls will remain open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Polling places are listed on sample ballots.
As noted on the sample ballot: “This is a primary election. Therefore you are confined legally to a choice of candidates for nomination within your own political party. The machine is so adjusted as to comply with the law, and will not permit you to vote in the primary of more than one political party.”
