Thornton and Sheppard to Challenge for Republican Freeholder Nomination

By Herald Staff

PRESS RELEASE:
OCEAN CITY– Freeholder Gerald M. Thornton and Ocean City Council President M. Susan Sheppard announce today that they will seek the Republican nomination for Cape May County Freeholder at the primary on June 8, 2010.
“I am thrilled to be running in the Republican Primary with Sue Sheppard,” said Thornton. “We can’t wait to bring our message of integrity and independence to the Republican voters. Sue Sheppard is a proven leader. Sue and I present the voters with a tremendous, balanced ticket: A man and woman. A Freeholder with years of experience speaking with an independent voice, and a young and energetic business woman and mother who happens to be the Council President of one of our County’s largest and most important resort communities, Ocean City. Together, Sue Sheppard and I intend to represent the people of Cape May County with a focus on their interests, and not the narrow interests of political bosses. This will be a positive campaign about all the good that candidates with integrity and independence can do. If the people of Cape May County are ready for a new and bright addition to the Board of Chosen Freeholders, Sue Sheppard is ready to serve. Sue and I are running on the ‘Integrity-Independence-Republican’ ticket as a demonstration that the era of closed door politics and backroom deals is over.”
“When I entered public service a few years ago, I vowed to always strive to do what I believed was in the best interests of the people, without regard to politics,” said Sheppard. “I have watched Jerry Thornton with great admiration. Time and time again, he has stood up to special interests to do what is right. The people we elect to the Board of Chosen Freeholders now, will shape the future of Cape May County. That future is too important to leave to the whims of political bosses. We need to give the people a voice. We will be taking our message of integrity and independence directly to all of the Republican voters in the Primary Election. That is why we have primary elections, so that all the voters, not just a select few, get to choose their candidates. I am so excited about campaigning throughout Cape May County with Jerry Thornton. Together with our volunteers, we intend to bring our positive message to every community in the County. We believe politics should be the art of addition, not subtraction. I am running on behalf of women; on behalf of mothers; on behalf of small business owners and on behalf of all of the people of Cape May County who feel they no longer have a voice. Jerry Thornton and I are committed to restoring the people’s confidence in our Party and our government.”
