Public invited to help with first traffic safety quilt

By On Deck Staff

The Ocean City Police Department Traffic Safety Unit and Ocean City’s Community Art Projects (CAP) are teaming up to bring art work to the bike path in Ocean City.
The public is invited to join volunteers in painting the intersection on April 26. Painting will begin at 9 a.m. and should run through the afternoon.
Using a design by Ocean City High School student, Rachel Ballezzi, volunteers will paint the intersection in a seashore theme. This is the first of many intersections the group hopes to paint along the bike path.
Three more intersections are planned for the fall. The joint mission is two-fold: to beautify Ocean City through public art, as well act as a traffic calming device along the established bike path.
Families are encouraged to attend and help out a good cause. Refreshments will be served and for youngsters too small to paint, there will be coloring pages of the design on hand.
“Volunteerism is the fabric of our community, and we believe bringing the community together on this project will foster a sense of community-spirit and pride, while providing an artistic attribute to the City in our efforts to encourage safety along the bike path,” said Leslie Skibo, President of CAP.
Skibo pointed out that in addition to CAP and the Ocean City Police Department others offering assistance include the City, the Art Department at OCHS, the Fire Department and a number of individual volunteers.
Paint and other supplies have been donated by the Thomas Heist Insurance Agency, Soltz Paint and the R.E. Darby Insurance Agency.
Last year CAP helped highlight the newly dedicated bike path by adding an original bike sculpture at 9th and Haven.
For more information, contact Skibo at 609-391-0579. In the event of inclement weather a make up date will be announced through CAP’s website, communityartprojects.com.
