WOODBINE — Running on the slate as “Independents for Woodbine” with Mayor William Pikolycky for two seats on Borough Council are Eduardo “Chino” Ortiz and Mary Helen Perez.
Ortiz is the current president of council.
He was born in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, and educated in Millville School System. He is bi-lingual, and has been a borough resident for 33 years.
Oritz and his wife, Miriam, have three children and two grandchildren, Alexis and Mia. He is owner-operator of Woodbine Dollar Plus.
Ortiz was elected to Borough Council in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2007.He is chair of the Community Affairs and Grant Committee, and is a member of Public Works and Public Safety Committee.
Members of Woodbine’s Boy Scout Troop 77 recognized his volunteer efforts.
An active member of St. Casimir’s Parish, he is a member of the Greater Woodbine Chamber of Commerce.
Perez is a lifelong resident of Woodbine and a graduate of Millville High School.
She has worked at the Family Health Drug Store for 28 years and at the Woodbine Developmental Center for 19 years as a Registered Pharmacist Technician, according to a release.
“For the past 20 years, Perez has worked tirelessly providing services to the sick and elderly in Cape May County, specifically Woodbine residents, by offering many individuals advice and help that offer an opportunity to flourish. Her community commitment started in 2009 when she became involved in local politics. During this time, she has volunteered for many causes,” the release continues.
“Since 2009, Perez has served on the Woodbine Planning/Zoning Board where she served with distinction and honor.
“For the past two years, she has worked very hard in the community by continuing her quest of educating the youth, their parents, senior citizens and residents, while providing supportive services that would improve the lives Woodbine residents.
“She feels that this is a time when the Woodbine residents can clearly see that change is necessary and we need new leadership.
“Perez is committed to maintaining the quality of life that Woodbine residents deserve, such as:
•Ensuring schools are efficient for the children of Woodbine.
•Maintaining lower taxes.
She will also be committed to maintaining an open business atmosphere by:
•Promoting more business opportunities.
•Creating private and public partnerships.
“Perez will work tirelessly to help solve the problems of all families that live in Woodbine by better utilizing the town’s staff, assets, to run a more efficient, effective and economically town.
Her son, Luis Guzman, is a third year college student at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
“I believe that it is crucial that the residents participate and become personally involved in what is occurring in the borough of Woodbine,” stated Perez.
