NORTH WILDWOOD — The youngest candidate in the City Council’s 1st Ward race is also the most experienced.
Incumbent Robert Maschio, 42, of Spruce Avenue, is running as an Independent Republican, having lost the city Republican Committee’s support to Margaret Bishop. He is seeking his third term on the governing body this November.
Maschio cited some disagreements he had with other council members as reasons for losing their support, including a land deal between the city and a councilman and the hiring of another councilman’s son.
“Political patronage bothers the hell out of me,” Maschio said. “There are too many career politicians in North Wildwood that are too used to getting what they want.”
Maschio noted that the city was facing a revaluation, downsizing and possible privatization and shared service agreements in certain departments. He is calling on the city to stop providing health insurance for its part time council members and vows that he will drop his own benefits this week.
“With the budget decisions we are facing, it’s time we led by example,” Maschio told the Herald. “We’re the biggest government in Cape May County, the taxpayers shouldn’t be funding health benefits for seven, part time council members.”
“Voters in the city, and our region, have clearly sent the message that we need to do more, with less, and make very difficult decisions,” Maschio said in a release.
Maschio graduated from Wildwood High School and the South Jersey Professional School of Business. He is a former North Wildwood School Board member.
Maschio belongs to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Greater Wildwood Optimist Club and is a board member for the Children’s Fresh Air Home. He is the president and general manager of Coastal Broadcasting.
He and his wife Kim are members of St. Ann’s Parish. They have four children, Jimmy, Bobby, Alexandra and Gabriella.
