COURT HOUSE — Burgess “Butch” Hamer, lifetime township resident and retired Middle Township police officer, announced Monday that he intends to run for a seat on township committee in the November general election.
Hamer, a member of the township school board, told the Herald that he submitted his petition to run as an Independent candidate.
Hamer is the owner of the Hamer School of Karate.
Hamer, whose children are fourth-generation township residents, served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He is also president of the local AARP, a board member of the county Healthy Community Coalition, and member of the American Legion, Middle Taxpayers Association and Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Hamer will face incumbent Democratic Committeeman Stephen Barry and Republican challenger Daniel Lockwood in the November election. Barry won the seat in 2006 earning 600 more votes than the Republican candidate Matthew Buesing. Lockwood lost the election last year to Mayor F. Nathan Doughty by less than 100 votes.
