COURT HOUSE — Democrat freeholder candidates Bob Jackson and Patrick Morley sent an open letter to Gov. Chris Christie asking that he issue an immediate executive order to end the abuse of the pension system by part-time politicians like Freeholder Jerry Thornton.
According to a release, Thornton collects a paycheck as a part-time freeholder of almost $18,000, and he collects a pension check as a retired freeholder of more than $11,000, all for the same job.
“Only in government in New Jersey can this type of thing happen. It is like a parallel universe for politicians. They can be retired from a job, and working at the same job, at the same time. Government is not supposed to be science fiction. It is supposed to be about serving people,” stated Jackson in a release.
Pat Morley, a newcomer to politics, stated this is why people want reform: “Just because it can be done, does not mean that it should be done. I am sure that there are politicians who have refused to abuse the system in this way, even though they could.
The politicians who have chosen to do it should be voted out of office.”
Jackson and Morley pledged that they will not participate in the pension system if they are elected to the freeholder board
