DeWeese Questions Van Drew on Taxpayer’s Burden for Bridge Demolition

By Press Release

CREST HAVEN – Republican State Senate Candidate Dave DeWeese questioned Democratic State Senator Jeff Van Drew about the estimated $9 million cost to the taxpayers of Cape May County for the demolition of the Beesley’s Point Bridge.
“Senator Van Drew, how could you burden the taxpayers of Cape May County with a $9 million liability?” asked DeWeese “In 2008, you told the people of Cape May County that the bridge had to be opened as a matter of life and death and that you could get Governor Corzine to pay the cost to repair the bridge. Now, three years later, the taxpayers of Cape May County have learned that the bridge will never be opened. Not only will the bridge never be opened, but the taxpayers will have to pay the $9 million cost to demolish the bridge. The State Department of Transportation says the State has no plan to pay for this cost.”*
DeWeese continued, “Mr. Van Drew, you convinced the elected officials of the County of Cape May to purchase the bridge for one dollar. It is clear that your motives were purely political. It was simply another way to grab a headline. Now, your one dollar deal has turned into a $9 million dollar taxpayer liability. So the question for the Senator is, how do you justify this $9 million dollar burden that you have imposed on the Cape May County residents and are the taxpayers really expected to pay for your botched attempt to boost your political popularity?”
