COURT HOUSE — As of the Mon., April 11 deadline, no Democrats filed petitions for two freeholders or sheriff with the Cape May County Clerk.
Thus, the Regular Republican candidates, Sheriff Gary Schaffer and Freeholder hopefuls Will Morey and Kristine Gabor will face no Democratic opposition this year.
That trio of candidates appeared with supporters at the Clerk’s Office as they their nominating petitions at 2 p.m.. They were nominated by the Republican County Committee at a March 9 convention at the Wildwoods Convention Center.
“This is a testament to the strength of the unified and resurgent Cape May County Republican Organization,” stated Cape GOP Chairman Michael Donohue in a release. “I believe it is also a strategic move on the part of Democratic State Sen. Jeff Van Drew. Van Drew must get Republican votes to win, and it would not help him to have to support Democratic candidates for sheriff and freeholder,” Donohue added.
“We, on the other hand, believe our strong county-level slate of Will Morey and Kristine Gabor for Free-holder and Gary Schaffer for Sheriff will be of great assistance to our legislative team of Dave DeWeese for Senate and Sam Fiocchi and Suzanne Walters for Assembly. We’re not taking anything for granted, how-ever. Our candidates and troops on the ground will be working hard to reach out to the voters and build momentum for the General Election in the Fall,” Donohue concluded.
