COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Republican committee members elected Jeffrey Pierson, a retired brigadier general and Upper Township Committee member as the freeholder replacement for Kristine Gabor, who resigned and relocated out of state.
Pierson received 99 votes. Barbara Tomalino of Court House, received 70 votes. Lower Township resident Gary Playford received five votes. Dennis Township resident Edward Beck received nine votes.
County Clerk Rita Fulginiti confirmed for county Republican Chairman Marcus Karavan there was a super majority present to allow the convention to proceed.
Present and voting on two voting machines under the auspices of members of the county Board of Election were 126 committee members. There were 57 mail-in ballots.
Fulginiti said those mail-in ballots were opened at 6 p.m. in the presence of the four candidates. All were sworn to secrecy, she said, so as not to taint the regular voting.
The turnout was 87 percent of the 210 committee members, she added.
Pierson will take his oath as a freeholder at the next freeholder meeting Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m.
He will remain in the seat until Dec. 31, 2017. He would have to seek election in November 2017 should he desire to seek the seat. If that would happen, Pierson would run with Freeholder Will Morey.
Cape May County – I’d like to suggest to the Herald that they leverage spout offs draw and replace some of the ads for their paper with a few paid ads that you probably can charge a little extra for. Lots of people…
