CREST HAVEN – Cape May County Commissioner Jeffrey Pierson announced he will not seek another term when the current one expires at the end of the year.
Pierson was appointed to the then-Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2016 when Kristine Gabor resigned because she was taking a job in Florida. The board later changed its designation to the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners.
According to The Press of Atlantic City, Pierson, 79, cited his age, some health concerns in 2021, and the fact that he was recently married as reasons for not wanting to run again.
Pierson spent 42 years in the military between the U.S. Army and the New Jersey National Guard. He was an undersheriff with the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office for six years, assigned to the Corrections Division. He served as an Upper Township committeeman before being appointed to the Board of Commissioners.
Pierson’s current term expires Dec. 31. Commissioner Will Morey is also up for reelection at the end of the year and plans to run again, The Press of Atlantic City’s article said.
It is not yet known who Morey’s running mate will be. The filing deadline for letters of intent is Feb. 15, and the candidate will be selected in mid-March by a vote of the county Republican Committee.
The county Democrats will have an opportunity to field candidates for the two seats, but have not fared well in previous elections.
The county Democratic Party is now under new leadership. Marie Blistan was selected Jan. 9 as the first woman to lead the county Democratic Committee. Names of those candidates will also be announced at a later date.
