Governor Chris Christie heads up the CapeGOP Column 2 Republican Team at the November 5, 2013, election. The Governor is joined by his running mate, Kim Guadagno. Lt. Governor Guadagno holds the distinction of being not only the first woman to be Lt. Governor, but the first person ever to hold that position. Next on the ballot in Column 2 is Susan Adelizzi-Schmidt for Senate. Susan is the first woman ever nominated by either the Democrats or Republicans to run for State Senate in District One. Susan’s historic candidacy is joined by Kristine Gabor who is running with Sam Fiocchi for State Assembly. This is the first time any legislative ticket in District One has included two women.
“It really is an historic year for us,” said CapeGOP Chairman Mike Donohue. “We have a very diverse Republican ticket. It was not so long ago that voters could expect a complete lack of diversity in our column. Those days are over. We have worked hard to recruit exceptional candidates of all stripes and we are very proud to offer the voters of Cape May County such a talented group of women and men in Column 2 this year. We have been very fortunate to recruit genuine and capable candidates who have the courage to stand in the public arena and commit themselves to helping others while looking out for taxpayers.”
Marie Hayes of Ocean City is part of the Column 2 Team, running with Freeholder Jerry Thornton. She is only the fourth woman to hold a County Freeholder seat. Three of those women, including Hayes, came to the office only since 2010. Sue Sheppard, now County Surrogate, was elected in 2010 and Kristine Gabor was elected in 2012. Hayes is completing Sheppard’s unexpired term and she and Thornton are running unopposed in November. But the Column 2 Republican women do not stop there.
In Dennis Township, Jennifer Hand is running for Township Committee. Jen is a Medical Social worker with a Master’s Degree and the mother of two school-aged daughters. She is active as a sports coach and a member of the local school board. Jen joins Mayor Gene Glembocki in Column 2 on November 5th. The CapeGOP Column 2 Team also includes Melanie Collins in Middle Township. Melanie is poised to become the first African-American woman ever to serve on Township Committee. Melanie is a Middle Township High School graduate and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. In North Wildwood, Peggy Bishop is seeking reelection to City Council.
“We are all very proud to be part of the CapeGOP Column 2 Republican Team this year,” said Chairman Mike Donohue. “This is just a great group of real people who want to serve the public.”
Election Day is November 5, 2013.
