CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Reiterating her position that public safety should be local government’s number one priority, GOP Township Committee candidate Melanie Collins endorsed a plan in the works to put more police officers on the streets.
“In tough budgetary times, we need to focus on our most important priorities,” Collins said. “Public safety should always be at the top of that list. Due to a combination of factors, our total force numbers have gotten too low to staff a truly proactive police force.”
Collins said she had met with Police Chief Chris Leusner to discuss the department’s needs and how adding more officers would enhance the department’s ability to meet its enforcement and service goals.
“Chief Leusner has a clear vision for the future of the MTPD,” Collins said. “I was impressed with the bold and innovative approaches he has taken to using technology and training to maximize the effectiveness of his officers and supervisors.”
Collins stressed that one critical component of the plan is that its effects on the Township budget going forward will be minimal. She praised Leusner for having the foresight to manage his budget planning, fully aware of the fiscal constraints on the Township.
“It was clear to me in our discussions, that Chief Leusner is well out in front on budgetary issues,” Collins explained. “I endorse his well-developed plan to grow the department, at a steady and reasonable pace, to the levels that have proven to be most effective and within the budgetary realities we now face.”
