Political newcomer Liz Casey of Upper Township and longtime community advocate Steve Barry of Middle Township today filed their petition for this year’s election to the Cape May County Freeholder Board. Previously serving as Senior Counsel to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, Casey maintains a local practice in Ocean City.
Describing herself as a fiscal conservative, Casey contends that greater restraints are needed to control county spending. Casey said, “The Freeholders boast about having a low tax rate. The tax rate doesn’t tell the real story. It’s about spending. The county’s budget has increased $19 million in just the last five years. This year’s budget that the Freeholder Board recently adopted is nearly six percent higher than last year. That’s not conservative spending and it hits taxpayers hard, especially our seniors on fixed incomes.”
Casey argues that there are no checks and balances on the Freeholder Board noting the unanimous approvals for out-of-line spending. “Especially as the county’s population continues to decline, these annual spending hikes have severe implications on taxpayers,” Casey said.
Beyond the large budgets, Barry is disturbed with the disparity in county government. “It’s troubling that a select few employees get large salaries increases while most workers are handed just-get-by paychecks. I believe most taxpayers would agree that county government should be fair and equitable to all its employees. It’s what employees deserve,” said Barry.
Barry is managing partner of Barry, Corrado, Grassi & Gillin-Schwartz in Wildwood. He previously served on Middle Township Committee and was a Freeholder candidate in 2005. Besides their Professional Affiliations, both Casey and Barry have extensive civic and charitable involvement in their local communities.
