COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Police Department says they recently received tips in reference to subjects creating clown Facebook profiles. These profiles are then used to harass and threaten students who have Facebook profiles with their personal phone numbers attached to the account.
One of these subjects has sent messages encouraging people to come find him in various wooded areas of Middle Township.
In recent weeks, there have been increasing reports of suspicious activity involving people dressed as clowns across the country. Middle Township Police Department wanted to warn the public to not get caught up in the ‘creepy clown’ craze. Dressing up as a clown to cause fear can be dangerous to the actor as someone may perceive that person as a threat and take action.
There was a recent shooting of someone dressed as a clown in Indiana. Also, there have been threats to schools across the country from people dressed as clowns on social media and phone texts.
Middle Township Police recommends that parents monitor all social media of their children and remove any contact information that may be attached. The Middle Township Police Department will take appropriate action against any person who uses the ‘creepy clown’ craze to cause fear or false public alarm.
Middle Township Police Department is actively investigating these tips and is working closely with the Middle Township School District.
“The safety of our children and the communities surrounding our schools is a top priority for us and we are taking this matter seriously,” stated Middle Township Police Department in a release.
Any information related to these social media posts or who is responsible should be reported to Middle Township Police Department at 609-465-8700.
Additionally, there was a reported clown sighting in Villas on the evening of Oct. 2. Middle Township Police Department will be coordinating with Lower Township Police Department to assist with this investigation.
Contact Lower Township Police Department at 609-886-1619 if you have information about this incident.
