Photo Contest: Return of Supermoon

By Herald Staff

Look, up in the sky! Is that the moon? No. It’s Supermoon!
This Saturday, July 12, Supermoon makes its return to Cape May County. A supermoon, according to Astrologer Richard Noelle, is “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90 percent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” The technical term for this phenomenon is “perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system.” In astronomy, the term “syzygy” refers to the straight-line configuration of three celestial bodies, which also occurs during a full moon. But let’s stick with Supermoon for our purposes.
PHOTO CONTEST
Snap a gorgeous photograph of this super-sized, full moon tinted by the horizon Saturday. Send your best photo to newswatch@cmcherald.com no later than Monday July 14, 9:00 a.m. Write “Supermoon” in the subject line. Who knows? If the stars are aligned, we may just use your photo on the front page of the Herald next week!
