OC Records First Virus-related Death as Holiday Weekend Starts

COURT HOUSE – May 22: As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, Cape May County reports eight new COVID-19 cases and two additional fatalities.
The deaths were an 85-year-old woman, from Ocean City, who was associated with a long-term care facility, and a 92-year-old man, from Woodbine. The total number of county residents who have succumbed to COVID-19 now is 47. The fatality in Ocean City was the town’s first.
The new cases included three in Lower Township, two in Woodbine and one each in Dennis and Middle townships and Wildwood City.
Today was the 16th consecutive day where the state reported less than 2,000 new cases, with 1,394. Total cases since New Jersey reported its first positive test March 4 are now 152,719. The state reported 146 new fatalities, bringing the count of those who have died due to the coronavirus to 10,985.
Gov. Phil Murphy continued to gradually relax restrictions, saying today that gatherings of 25 people would be permitted outdoors. The limit of 10 individuals remains in place for inside gatherings. Murphy urged individuals to continue practicing social distancing and to wear masks when appropriate.
