The Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education (ANJEE) recently recognized NJAS Nature Center of Cape May Program Director, Sue Ann Slotterback, with the 2008 Excellence in Environmental Education Award.
Slotterback received the award in the Nonformal Sector for her work with schools.
One of those who nominated her for the award is a third grade teacher in Maurice River Township Schools, who described the environmental education programs that Slotterback has developed for and with her students, including tagging and releasing Monarch butterflies and a month-long study of raptors.
Another teacher shared how Slotterback’s guidance made it possible to develop a wetland nature trail behind her school.
“Sue’s commitment to environmental education is evident to all who have worked with her and have been taught by her,” said New Jersey Audubon’s Vice President of Education, Dale Rosselet. “Sue’s love for environmental education is the magic that helps her reach and connect with even the most reluctant learner. She provides students of all ages with experiences that foster a greater appreciation of our natural world.”
Slotterback has worked at the Nature Center of Cape May since 1994 and has served as program director since 1998. Prior to that, she was a teacher-naturalist and program director at the NJ Marine Sciences Consortium.
She has also devoted over 25 years to the Girl Scouts of America as a volunteer leader, manager, and trainer. She has served on municipal environmental commissions, school advisory boards, and on ANJEE’s Advisory Council. She is an active participant in ANJEE South’s programs.
Slotterback’s award was presented at a banquet on January 30 during ANJEE’s annual conference, held in Princeton.
