Sure, you could cruise bars or even tune in to Comcast’s dating service On Demand to find Mister or Missus Right, but if you are looking for unconditional love, you’re better off seeing what matchmaker Kevin Fisher, of the Humane Society of Ocean City (HSOC) has to say. Now, thanks to a new Comcast local service On Demand in Cape May County, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your couch to find the four-legged friend who’s right for you.
A Comcast television crew was onsite at HSOC last Tuesday, filming Kevin with more than a dozen dogs and cats, who are looking for permanent homes. In one or two minute spots, Kevin introduced each pet to the camera, telling a bit about their age, their breed and their overall health and temperament in the hope that some Comcast viewer will fall in love at first sight and consider adopting.
Not every animal is Lassie, however. Some are camera shy and others don’t like to stay still for long, but with gentle coaxing, Kevin shows their best side, as he explains to viewers what kinds of homes are best for each animal.
“We see this new platform as another way to end pet homelessness in our community as it brings available pets right into the living rooms of families who can provide a wonderful loving home,” said Fischer. ”We look forward to the saved pets and increase in adoptions this program will bring, and we are so very grateful for the opportunity to participate.”
The Ocean City Shelter is a “no-kill” facility, so the animals in its care are guaranteed a home, but Fischer said that he hopes the program will help find permanent, loving homes for the shelter’s residents, so that there is space to provide temporary homes for other animals in crisis.
The profiles are made available to Comcast Digital Cable customers in Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland Counties and refreshed periodically with footage of new animals up for adoption.
The Pet Adoptions on Demand program has been a Comcast exclusive in the Philadelphia area in 2006, and camera crews make regular trips local shelters there to match homeless pets with their future owners. The Animal Welfare Association in Camden County and Cumberland County SPCA joined the program earlier this year, and now Cape May County animals are being offered a similar advantage.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Humane Society of Ocean City to help find loving homes for abandoned pets in South Jersey,” said Comcast Spokesperson Margo Ferro. “We hope people tune in and that this innovative approach truly impacts adoption rates.”
According to Comcast, that program has been extremely effective. In fact, ninety percent of the pets that have appeared on the Philadelphia-based program have been adopted. This service is available at no cost to Comcast Digital Cable subscribers on “Channel One”, “Get Local” programming.
But you don’t have to wait to find your true love on T.V., you can visit the Humane Society of Ocean City website at petfinder.com or call 609-399-2018 for more information.
