WILDWOOD – Wildwood Police Department responded to Leaming Avenue and the Beach for a report of a possible drowning at that location Sept. 3.
Investigation revealed that at approximately 12:50 p.m., Wildwood Beach Patrol lifeguards entered the water to rescue several swimmers in distress. Once back on shore it was discovered that one swimmer, a 35-year-old male from Middletown, Pa., was missing.
As a result, a search and rescue effort was initiated consisting of police, fire, and beach patrol units from Wildwood, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest, as well as the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard.
At approximately 2:50 p.m., surfers located the body of a male floating in the water at Rambler Avenue and the Beach in Wildwood Crest.
Lifeguards from the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol entered the water and retrieved the male, starting lifesaving measures until the arrival of Wildwood Crest Rescue personnel. The male was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
No additional information will be provided at this time pending the notification of the victim’s family.
