VILLAS – On May 1, members of Lower Township Police Department and Lower Township Rescue Squad were dispatched to the first block Sprucewood Avenue in Villas for the report of a fall victim.
According to a release, upon arrival, officers found Joel Duarte-Dutra, 47, of Maple Shade, unconscious and bleeding on the ground. Witnesses stated he fell from scaffolding while framing a porch on the residence, which is under construction.
Lifesaving efforts were attempted by Lower Township Police Department, Lower Township Rescue Squad and, AtlantiCare Emergency Medical Services, with negative results. Originally, a medevac helicopter was requested, but later cancelled when pronouncement was made on scene.
Initial investigation revealed that Duarte-Dutra was working on self-constructed scaffolding and was possibly struck by a large board falling, which resulted in him subsequently falling from the scaffolding and succumbing to his injuries.
The incident is being investigated by Patrolman Kyle Boyle, Lower Township Police Department Detective Division, and members of Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office/Medical Examiner’s Office.
