Join Great Books Group

By On Deck Staff

The Cape May County Library is looking for new participants for the Great Books Reading and Discussion Group. Great Books has been meeting at the Main Library for more than 15 years.
Discussion sessions are held every other Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon from mid-September through April at the Main Library, 30 Mechanic Street, Court House.
The group uses a series of books issued by the Great Books Foundation which include works of philosophy, drama, poetry, and short stories. The cost of the book is $24.95.
Two professors at the University of Chicago launched the Great Books Foundation in 1947. Today more than 850 Great Books groups meet across the country. Groups consist of passionate readers who meet and talk about enduring issues and ideas.
A sample of this year’s reading includes: The Man Who Would Be King by Rudyard Kipling, The Introduction to the Second Sex by Simone De Beauvoir, The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, and The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli.

Also at the main branch–
Don Freiday of the Cape May Bird Observatory will present “Wild Journeys: The Incredible Migrations of Birds,” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Cape May County is considered the migration capital of North America and nearly all of New Jersey’s birds are migratory, some of which literally span the globe in their travels. As fall migration approaches, the lecture tracks the amazing journey of birds, highlighting those familiar and those not as recognizable in Cape May County.
Don Freiday is a graduate of Rutgers University where he went on to teach undergraduate student Wildlife Ecology. Freiday is the Regional Coordinator for the New Jersey Breeding Bird Atlas, member of the New Jersey Bird Records Committee and on the Executive Board of the New Jersey Chapter of the Wildlife Society.
And there are many more events planned at the library. Call 463-6350 or e-mail kateg@cmclibrary.org.
