WILDWOOD – In the wake of recent after-hours rescues, the mayors of North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest are urging beach goers to observe the rules and regulations of the beach before accessing the water, and to never swim when lifeguards are off duty.
Within the last 48 hours, there have been two major rescues that occurred while the lifeguards were off-duty in the Wildwoods – six victims were rescued at approximately 8:20 p.m. Aug. 6 in North Wildwood, and three victims were rescued at approximately 7:08 p.m. Aug. 7 in Wildwood. Unfortunately, one of the victims from the rescue in Wildwood has resulted in a fatality.
“With the recent after-hours rescues and hurricane season quickly approaching, it is more important now than ever that our visitors are aware of our beach rules and regulations, and to only swim when the lifeguards are on duty,” stated North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello.
“This is the time-period when we have riptides, and the largest crowds in terms of tourism. The Beach Patrol chiefs and all of the mayors would like the public to know that it is always ill-advised to swim at night, after-hours, when lifeguards are off-duty,” stated Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano.
“The ocean and beach are the most beautiful, environmental assets that our communities have to offer, but it does not come without risk,” stated Wildwood Crest Mayor Carl Groon. “Swimming without lifeguards on duty can be the difference between life and death.”
