WILDWOOD CREST—For the past several years’ locals have gathered at Turtle Gut Park to remember the people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and specifically the life of Andrew Alameno, a Wildwood Crest native who was a victim of the attacks.
Firefighters, policemen and retired veterans were all in attendance for the evening’s event. Men, women and children stood alongside the service workers as everyone came together to remember why the American flag is hoisted high into the air.
Before the event began, programs and poppies were given to all who were in attendance. Attached to the poppies is a reminder, “Sept. 11th, 2001. We Remember” and on the flip side it states, “Wear it Proudly.”
The sound of bagpipes echoed in the air, as Celtic Spirit-Bagpiper Jim Rembisz played in tribute to Andrew Alimino and all who died on that fateful day. Pastor Thomas Fisher of First United Methodist Church gave the Invocation to the event as the crowd came together in prayer.
Commissioner Don Cabrera led the Pledge of Allegiance for the ceremony and Mayor Carl Groon soon welcomed everyone to Turtle Gut Park. It was a moment of communal togetherness that reached everyone throughout the park.
Bradari Altman informed the crowd of the Eagle Scout Project. The project was set out to restore Turtle Gut Park from its slightly run down state. The flagpole where Andrew Alameno’s plaque sits beside is now in brand new condition. Red and white mums as well as blue asters were planted around the park, as a reminder of our nation’s colors.
Reverend Miles J. Barrett gave the Benediction and the event was closed out with another playing of Jim Rembisz’ bagpipes. The crowd then dissipated with the thoughts of all the lives lost on that tragic day just twelve years ago.
