RIO GRANDE – Cape May County Department of Health received confirmation that a horse tested positive for rabies Jan. 8.
According to a release, the horse, named Bentley, belonged to Fox Wood Farms, Rio Grande.
The Cape May County Department of Health, New Jersey Department of Health and New Jersey Department of Agriculture are currently addressing all issues related to this case including exposure controls, prophylaxis measures, animal quarantine and gathering all other pertinent information.
“Rabies is a fatal disease in humans and any animal bite or exposure should be taken seriously,” stated Kevin Thomas, health officer at the Cape May County Department of Health.
The rabies virus is shed in the saliva of animals that are infected with the virus. It is extremely important to seek medical attention after exposure.
Contact such as petting a rabid animal and contact with blood, urine, or feces is not a possible transmission of rabies.
Anyone who has visited Fox Wood Farms from Dec. 26, 2018 through Jan. 5, 2019 was urged to contact their primary care physician for screening prior to going directly to the emergency room for post exposure rabies vaccination.
