Hobie Cats are back!

By On Deck Staff

Majestic Hobie Cats have been part of the Wildwoods history since 1984, with their colorful sails painting the powdery white beaches year after year. This year, Wildwoods Classic Cup XXIV, will be held August 16-17. A new location was also chosen: the beach at Schellenger Avenue.
More than 120 racers from the Mid-Atlantic Region will get together to participate in the regatta, competing in Single Hand (one-person), Double Hand (two-person) and Youth Class races on courses viewed by seas of spectators on the Wildwoods beaches. Races begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, weather permitting.
As many as 40 catamarans may race at any one time, setting the stage for some stiff competition and turning the Atlantic Ocean into a canvas of color as 16, 17 and 18-foot Hobie Cat sailboats maneuver through flagged courses.
“What makes this event so special is you don’t have to qualify to compete. There are husband and wife, father and son, and mother and daughter teams, making it a great family fun experience, said organizer Rob Wagner.
“The classes are divided into class A, B and C based on skill level, so everyone who wants to compete can register.”
