COURT HOUSE – With placement of steel girders on the Garden State Parkway southbound overpasses at Crest Haven Road, Stone Harbor Boulevard and Shell Bay Avenue, the process of finishing the project took a step closer, although still quite a while away. Once the southbound work is done traffic patterns will shift, and the project will focus on northbound lanes for similar work.
The girders, like a linchpin, are a key component in the project.
Produced in Lancaster, Pa. by High Steel Structures LLC, work on the ones used over Stone Harbor Boulevard started last August, and each took two months of preparation. The company is “one of the largest steel fabricators,” according to Lisa Masters, marketing communication and research specialist for High Steel.
The seven girders spanning Stone Harbor Boulevard are the longest in the project at 140-feet each weighing 44,000 pounds (22 tons). They were eased into position June 5 by a massive crane that made placement seem like play. Once in place, workers secured each, a process that lasted from before sunset until the early hours of June 6.
Each overpass has seven girders, with Crest Haven Road’s being 105 feet long and Shell Bay Avenue girders at 90 feet.
While the girders may seem large, Masters said the firm has produced even larger ones for other projects.
