CREST HAVEN – Members of the 253rd Transportation Company of New Jersey National Guard got a pop from Cub Scouts of Pack 65, Court House Dec. 2.
Clad in various uniforms, the scouts, ages 5-11, dug into cardboard boxes and gave each soldier a bag of caramel popcorn as the company, under command of Capt. Samuel Waltzer, stood outside the armory.
Sandra Maund, Pack 65 committee chair, told the unit that donation money received usually goes to military servicemen and women overseas, but Pack 65 wanted to keep it “local” and support the troops close to home.
Maund said one of the boys hatched the idea this year to give the treat to the 253rd Transportation Company since they had done a good turn for those in Florida after Hurricane Irma struck the state.
Maund, whose husband Brian is Cubmaster, said that Middle Township public school teachers also helped to raise funds by having a “dress down” day.
She said it is the first time the scouts donated to the local National Guard unit.
As they received popcorn, many of the Guard members smiled and thanked the boys for their caring idea.
Taking part in the afternoon’s event was Aidan Crowding, Cubmaster Brian Maund, Matthew Sides, Aiden Radzieta, Jonathan Walker, Mason Maund,  Benjamin Banks, Michael Zuzulock, Robert Walker, Kurt Himstedt, Frank Lashley, Owen Radzieta, Ty Gandy, Chase Radzieta, Jack McGarr and Bobby Andrzejczak.
Cub Scout Troop 65 has approximately 70 scouts ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. The pack meets on Wednesday nights at Elementary No. 2 school, Pacific Avenue, Court House.
