WEST WILDWOOD ─ Borough residents gathered June 3 for the Borough Commission meeting, but Mayor Christopher Fox was unable to attend as an earlier meeting ran late. Thus, Commissioner Cornelius Maxwell presided.
Under ordinances, amending “the current land use ordinance and related building code” was passed upon second reading. According to Donna Frederick, municipal clerk, the ordinance will allow the borough to elevate the fence along the back of Borough Hall.
Eight resolutions came before the commissioners, including the insertion of a “Clean Communities Grant for 2016.”
Frederick announced the grant amount as over $4,000.
Filing an application to the USDA for “pipeline and rehabilitation equipment” was also approved by the board.
Also authorized was “a leasing and management agreement between the Borough of West Wildwood and the county for Block 114 Lot 8.”
Neptune Park, known as Block 114 Lot 8, is leased to West Wildwood, and the resolution provides for the reapplication process, according to Frederick.
During reports, Maureen Smith, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, announced that $638 resulted from the hoagie sale. “The sign made the difference,” Smith said, thanking all who participated and the borough for their support.
Although the auxiliary does not meet in the summer, Smith said the ladies will be involved in the Fourth of July Parade and Family Festival. “We’re keeping it simple,” Smith explained. However, Smith expects a “very active summer” for the auxiliary.
Commissioner Scott Golden announced that Public Works will provide “temporary access to the beach” for the summer season. Due to the Fourth of July weekend, the next borough meeting will commence June 30 at 9 a.m.
As public comment unfolded, a complaint about an abandoned property came before the commissioners again. “I appreciate your concern,” said Maxwell, “but I can’t make the bank come out.” When asked if the borough could condemn the building, Borough Administrator Chris Ridings replied, “We can do that.”
Ridings explained that countless “zombie properties” exist throughout the state. Borough Solicitor Andrew Cafiero assured the resident that he would meet with the attorneys involved. “I wish I had a better answer for you,” said Maxwell.
