NORTH WILDWOOD — Yield to pedestrians, is something most motorists learn in Driver’s Education courses, however increased traffic volume, especially at the shore, can make crossing the street a dangerous task.
The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety has announced it will unveil a new, statewide Pedestrian Safety Decoy Program on August 13 here. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at 3rd Avenue and JFK Boulevard.
The kick-off will include a visual demonstration of the Pedestrian Decoy Program and re-marks from Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety Pam Fischer, Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer and North Wildwood Mayor William Henfey.
The Pedestrian Decoy Program is designed to educate New Jersey motorists about safely sharing the road with pedestrians. The initiative places undercover police officers, acting as pedestrians, in crosswalks. Motorists who fail to yield to undercover officers crossing the street are stopped and either warned or ticketed by uniformed officers a short distance away.
Police officers from North Wildwood, Wildwood, Northfield, Somers Point, Longport, Pleasantville, Vineland, Linwood, Ocean City and Sea Isle City will be in attendance.
