NORTH WILDWOOD ─ “It shall be the responsibility of licensed entities…to place identification wristband on the patron to ensure that said patron has been checked for proper identification.” These words compose a new component of North Wildwood Alcoholic Beverage Control ordinance, recently introduced.
As explained by City Clerk Scott Jett the city’s stance required updating concerning patrons taking alcoholic products out of its retail setting.
Scott told the Herald that sponsors/dispensers who sell their products in an open setting during special events (i.e., Irish Festival, Italian Festival, etc.) are required by the state ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) Board to give wristbands. Those wristbands help police, and public safety officials know that proper identification checks have been made.
If passed, the ordinance will require bars and other establishments to give wristbands to patrons who take out alcohol in “open containers.”
According to Mayor Patrick Rosenello, any establishment which does not permit patrons to take an alcoholic beverage with them are not subject to the new standard.
“I think it’s (wristbands) a good idea,” said Rosenello Nov. 27. The law will help ensure that no minors have access to alcohol in a “pass-off” situation, as explained by Jett.
According to Rosenello, it is the responsibility of business owners to ensure wristbands are distributed to patrons.
Will the wristbands look alike? Rosenello said no. Talks of creating a uniform wristband have taken place. However, Rosenello said the wristbands are “easily identifiable.”
The amended ordinance will have a second reading at the regular city council meeting, Dec. 5.
