CAPE MAY – Cape May City Council approved an award Jan. 15 for $472,000 for Phase II of the traffic calming work being done on Pennsylvania Avenue. The work is part of a multi-phase effort to reduce traffic speeds on both Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh avenues that has already led to a reduction of the speed limit on Pittsburgh and the introduction of a median strip along parts of Pennsylvania.
Council member Shaine Meier reminded the public that the area of Pennsylvania Avenue leading to the Coast Guard Base represents the “largest concentration of children in our town.” Efforts to reduce speeds in that area have been championed by both residents and Coast Guard officials.
Council member Zack Mullock pointed out that the project will benefit from a $156,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation.
