Woodbine School Budget Means Staff Cuts, Textbooks Buying Deferred

By Herald Staff

WOODBINE — A much leaner annual School District Budget was presented to the Woodbine Board of Education at its budget hearing on March 30, according to a release from Business Administrator Alan Parmelee.
This was in response to a $222,899 reduction in General Fund State Aid for the 2010-2011 school-year and the need to keep taxes at 2009-2010 levels.
The budget as presented calls for reductions in the following areas:
• Staffing – two full-time positions were cut (one of which was a retirement) and two part-time positions were reduced.
• The purchase of new mathematics textbooks was deferred and classroom supplies were reduced.
• One of two transportation runs to Millville was cut.
• Planned summer maintenance work was deferred.
The district also anticipates moving ahead with a planned roof replacement, solar panel installation and boiler replacement to take advantage of energy savings during the upcoming heating season.
State Aid Summary: General Fund Incr/(Decr) ($222,899.00) Restricted Special Revenues Incr/(Decr) $145,852.00 Net Decrease ($77,047.00)
Tax Levy: Tax rate remains the same for 2010-11
Staffing: Two full-time positions cut (one of which is a retirement not being replaced) Two part-time positions reduced
Other Reductions: Purchase of new mathematics textbooks deferred.
Classroom supplies reduced
Student transportation costs reduced
Planned maintenance work deferred
Other notes: The roof, solar panel and boiler replacement projects will move forward as planned to take advantage of energy savings.
