WOODBINE – The Woodbine Municipal Utilities Authority has made application to USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Water Disposal Loan and Grant Program for Woodbine Water System Improvements for funding totaling approximately $4 million for a four-pronged, two-phase upgrade to the municipality’s water system.
The first component would upgrade and replace various components of the Borough’s water supply and treatment plant, while the second element would extend the Borough’s water distribution system along Fidler Hill Road from the existing system located along Route 550.
The remaining two pieces of the project are extension of the Borough’s water system along portions of Fidler Road, Sumner Avenue, and Heilprin Avenue to complete looping of the water system in the area, and extension of the Borough’s water system within the Municipal Airport complex.
With engineering, permitting, and other required fees, the total project is estimated to cost just over $4 million.
Designed to help very small, financially-challenged rural communities extend and improve water and waste treatment facilities that serve local households and businesses, the USDA Water and Waste Program aims to save tax dollars, improve the natural environment, and help manufacturers and businesses to locate or expand operations through the local implementation of good practices.
“As the Borough’s water treatment plant had its last major capital improvements in the 1980s, upgrading of the system will ensure its continued usage in a safe, economical, and compliant manner,” concluded Mayor Pikolycky. “Additionally, by eliminating dead-end mains and extending the water system, we are enhancing public health while also creating an opportunity to bring more economic development to the Borough.”
