WOODBINE – The Borough of Woodbine has made application to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for municipal aid funding in the amount of approximately $125,000 for reconstruction of DeHirsch Avenue from Washington to Heilprin Avenues.
Woodbine received municipal aid from NJDOT in 2015 in the amount of $175,000 that partially funded this project; this request would complete this $300,000 project as originally designed.
The road is heavily travelled by the travelling public being an alternate parallel route to County Road No.550 to the north as well as providing access to a number of commercial businesses along its length. It also serves as a main thorofare for employees commuting to and from the Woodbine Developmental Center. It also serves as part of a NJ Transit Bus Route with designated stops at both ends of the project limits and as Bus Route for school buses transporting sending district students.
The roadway is a natural extension of the downtown Washington Avenue Streetscape project which has been a work in progress for more than a decade.
The roadway is crossed and heavily used by students travelling by foot or bicycle to the Woodbine Elementary School and the facilities (i.e.—crosswalks, signage, etc.) to make the route safe for these students are lacking. (Woodbine has no courtesy busing for its students.)
The existing drainage facilities are deteriorated and inadequate to handle most storm events and the resultant flooding restricts traffic flow as well as contributing to deterioration of the roadway pavement.
“The Borough and the Cape May County Engineer are in partnership on this project as well as the CR 550 & CR 638 projects for roadway reconstruction, including drainage facilities,” added Mayor Pikolycky. “hopeful, NJDOT will look favorably on this most recent request.”
