WOODBINE — The Borough of Woodbine has made application to United States Department of Agriculture– Rural Development for $30,000 for a Predevelopment Planning Grant (PPG) to develop design-and feasibility analyses and cost estimates related to implementing a new wastewater collection system for the Borough which would, ultimately, be connected to the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Previously, the Borough made successful application to USDA-Rural Development for a SEARCH grant of $30,000 to evaluate, in conjunction with the CMCMUA, the most efficient and cost-effective method of replacing the tanker transportation of leachate to the MUA’s treatment facility nine miles away.
It further evaluated the extent to which the businesses and residents of the Borough and the Woodbine Developmental Center might benefit through the construction of a wastewater collection system to replace the current septic systems throughout Woodbine, and the role of the Woodbine Wastewater Treatment Plant as a primary or secondary facility.
With the work under the SEARCH Grant completed, the next step is to define the area to be served by a wastewater collection system and to analyze the alternatives from a variety of perspectives, including costs, permitting, efficiencies, and user rates, among other factors.
The goal of the USDA PPG is to prepare the information that will be necessary in applying for funding to develop plans and specs and construct needed improvements.
“This represents a unique opportunity for the Borough to address current and future wastewater needs as this recognized growth area in the Pinelands continues to develop its economic and neighborhood resources over time,” noted Mayor Pikolycky.
