WOODBINE – The Borough of Woodbine has made two applications to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for grant funding under its Transportation Trust Program, totaling approximately $800,000.
The first application, in the amount of $249,628.50, is for the Extension of the Woodbine Bikeway System from Monroe Avenue just south of Webster Avenue extending south through Borough-owned property which is being developed as Open Space and thence east along Sumner Avenue to Heilprin Avenue. This extension would lead into and connect with the planned Open Space-funded recreational area and environmental educational park as well as to the Community School site which includes a branch of the Cape May County Library.
This new bikeway is part of an overall plan to interconnect publically-owned sites within the Borough to New Jersey’s High Point to Cape May bikeway system. It also connects to the Belleplain State Forest Trail system.
The second application, also to the NJDOT Municipal Aid Program, is for road reconstruction of Sumner Avenue between Heilprin Avenue and Tyler Road, including the installation of stormwater infrastructure to correct recurring flooding problems. This project is a continuation of the recently NJDOT funded Heilprin and Sumner Avenue Phase 1 project. Phase 1 included the balance of work on Heilprin up to Sumner and a small portion of Sumner running westerly towards Tyler Road.
Due to the cost of the balance of work on Sumner Avenue, the current application is being broken down into two additional phases: Phase 2 (Heilprin to approximately the mid-block heading west) and Phase 3 (being the balance of Sumner up to Tyler Road.) The amount requested is $546,596.63.
“Both of these projects continue infrastructure improvements to our community that will enhance the health, safety, and welfare of our residents and those who use Woodbine’s streets and bikepaths and we hope the applications will be looked upon favorably,” concluded Mayor Pikolycky.
