WILDWOOD — During this year’s general election on November 2, Wildwood residents will have the opportunity to vote on changing the City’s three-member commission form of government, a traditional, but somewhat inefficient, format that does not distinguish between executive and administrative functions.
The City Commissioners will await the electorate’s choice, but have indicated that they recommend changing to a Council-Manager structure, in which five nonpartisan council members are elected at large for staggered terms at elections held in November.
Under this form of government, the Mayor will be selected by the Council from among its members. He or she will preside ceremonially over City meetings, but it is the Council, collectively, that will have complete responsibility for municipal affairs—unlike the Mayor- Council form adopted by Wildwood between the years of 1982 and 1994, which some believe
gave the Mayor disproportionately strong executive power.
The Municipal Manager position is created by State Statute to implement all policies of the Council and oversee daily operations of the City.
If passed, the change of government will become effective January 1, 2012. Candidates for the five council seats would seek election in the November 2011 general election.
