Wildwood Unleashes Strict Laws for ‘Rowdy Houses’

By Lauren Suit

WILDWOOD — Loud and disruptive behavior won’t be tolerated at the city’s infamous “rowdy houses.”
That’s the strong message the city commission wants to send when commissioners voted for strict new measures to be put in place to combat the nuisance homes.
“It is upsetting to receive phone calls from residents whose peace and quiet has been disrupted and from visitors whose vacations have been ruined, largely because of tenants of absentee landlords,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. “ I am determined that owners of nuisance properties will be held accountable. The days when residents, vacationers and city officials have to baby sit these rowdy tenants is over.”
Municipal Prosecutor Mary D’Arcy Bittner drafted the revamped rowdy house ordinance, which encompasses all types of properties including apartments, hotels, motels, condominiums and rental homes.
The new law includes a range of penalties and an appointed Hearing Officer to specifically handle rowdy house cases.
Commissioner Bill Davenport, who oversees the department of public safety, said the city has a “zero tolerance” police when it comes to rowdy houses and underage drinking. He said the new law will hold property owners and managers fully responsible for the condition of their properties as well as the behavior of their tenants.
Wildwood Police Chief Steven Long added that citizen involvement is essential for the police to continue to combat disruptive behavior.
“We need all the eyes and ears we can get,” said Long.
