WILDWOOD – Wildwood’s National Night Out, a crime and drug prevention event, set an attendance record the night of Aug. 5.
More than 1000 local residents and their children, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials participated in the annual event held this year at Fox Park here.
The popular gathering is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
“This was a great community event,” said Wildwood Police Chief Steven Long. “The police department is pleased to be part of something that brings local children and their families together with law enforcement personnel for a fun and educational evening.”
The event featured law and public safety demonstrations and educational displays, a visit from a New Jersey State Police emergency response helicopter, pony rides, a dunk tank, many more games and activities, plus food and refreshments. The Boardwalk Special Improvement District sponsored a spectacular fireworks display.
Wildwood police officer Sue Lemon chaired the organizing committee, which included representatives from the Greater Wildwood Municipal Alliance, Healthy Community Coalition, Main Street Wildwood, Wildwood Public Works and the Wildwood Fire Department. The Greater Wildwood Elks and the Wildwood Business Improvement District provided substantial financial support. More than 30 organizations, individuals and businesses contributed door prizes, refreshments and funds to help make the event so successful.
“Tonight’s event showed what can be accomplished when people work together for the common good,” said Wildwood Fire Chief Conrad Johnson. “National Night Out has grown year after year as more and more people in the community become involved.”
