Wildwood Police Receive Grant to Enforce Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

By Press Release

WILDWOOD — A grant from the State of New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety will allow the city to put more officers on its streets during the Labor Day holiday as part of its crackdown on drunk driving.
“Driving drunk is one of the most deadly, yet most preventable, causes of vehicular death,” said Wildwood Chief of Police Robert Regalbuto. “And the Labor Day holiday brings an increase in travel throughout the area and an increase in drunk driving.”
With the $5,000 grant from the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety, Wildwood police will be better able to enforce its zero tolerance policy when it comes to drunk driving.
According to Regalbuto, of the 10,076 people killed throughout the United States in drunk-driving crashes in 2013, 65 percent were the drunk drivers themselves. Among the drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over Labor Day weekend in 2013, 45 percent of those fatalities involved a drunk driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.
“We consider drunk driving to be a very serious problem throughout the state of New Jersey,” Regalbuto said. “The Wildwood Police Department works diligently every day of the year to make sure those who drink and drive in the City of Wildwood are apprehended and arrested. With this additional funding we will be able to increase our patrols and keep the residents and visitors to our city safe while they enjoy the Labor Day holiday.”
