Wildwood Police Chief Receives State Certification

WILDWOOD – Chief Steven Long of the Wildwood Police Department has been awarded designation as a Certified Chief Law Enforcement Executive (CCLEE) by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP). The certification program is designed to elevate the professional standards and individual performance of law enforcement executives in the State of New Jersey.
“I commend Chief Long for receiving this impressive certification,” said Commissioner of Public Safety, Bill Davenport. “It is important for our Police Department to keep improving in order to better serve the community. Chief Long’s outstanding achievement sets a great example for the entire department.”
To receive the CCLEE certification, Chief Long was required to complete training, education and professional development seminars, courses and programs. Topics of instruction included: Command and Leadership, Emergency Management, Supervision Techniques, Executive Management, Missing and Exploited Children, Safe Schools, Ethical Decision Making and Community Policing.
Currently, active sworn law enforcement officers who are the chief executives of a qualified law enforcement agency operating in the State of New Jersey (local, county, state or federal) are eligible to apply for the CCLEE credential. In addition to experience and training requirements, involvement with community, civic and charitable organizations is also required.
“Wildwood recently was awarded an $800,000 grant that will enable us to hire three full-time police officers,” said Commissioner Davenport. “We received this competitive grant through the efforts and initiative of our Police Department. Chief Long’s certification improves our ability to work cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies and to receive future grant money for special projects.”
Chief Long is a Cape May County native, joining the Wildwood Police Department in June, 1985 after several summers as a seasonal officer. He holds a degree in Criminal Justice from Stockton State College. In 2005, he graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy, Quantico, VA, and was promoted to Chief of Police in April, 2007.
