WILDWOOD — After the State of New Jersey passed a law in January allowing towns to move nonpartisan elections to coincide with the November general election, Wildwood, along with many other municipalities, is considering changing its municipal election date.
On Wed., Sept. 22, an ordinance was introduced that would change Wildwood’s
municipal election date from May to November.
Benefits associated with the change include fiscal savings — between $15,000 and $30,000 per election — and convenience to residents in offering a municipal election concurrently with national elections.
According to a release, November elections typically attract a much larger turnout than do those in May. When elections are made more convenient, voter participation increases, and that is always a worthy goal.
An election held in the Fall would more accurately reflect the opinions of the entire population of Wildwood, the release stated, thereby increasing the chance that candidates with the most public support would be elected.
The City of Wildwood encourages any citizen with inquiries regarding the potential change of election date or form of government to contact governmentquestions@wildwoodnj.org.
