Wildwood Master Plan Has Many Facets

WILDWOOD – “We can put our heads down on the pillow knowing we do the best we can,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano as he revealed part of an evolving master plan for Wildwood.
From Pacific Avenue to the Boardwalk and a new entrance scheme, Wildwood commissioners seek to bring businesses, residential opportunities and increase tourism.
Though the plan is developing, Troiano shared three specific aspects Oct. 11 at the Lions Center.
Boardwalk Rehab
First, Troiano pointed out the need for a Boardwalk renovation. In its present location since the 1920s, the boards require replacement and city commission has decided upon using Brazilian hardwood. Troiano assures that the wood is harvested from farms and not illegally from the rainforest.
Troiano is seeking grants to repair the Boardwalk; according to commissioners, approx. $50 million is needed for a complete renovation. Byron says the Boardwalk is the city’s “oceanfront value” and prime real estate.
Pacific Avenue
When asked if a plan exists for Pacific Avenue, Commissioner Peter Byron replied in the affirmative.
Byron wishes to eventually offer residential development on the north and south ends of Pacific Avenue to make the project “more manageable.”
Attracting businesses is also part of the agenda. By increasing the city’s ratables, revenue will increase and thus help lower taxes, officials hope.
Give Much, Get Little
Troiano commented on the tax situation by explaining that Wildwood is the second largest contributor of taxes to Trenton. Over $7 million is annually paid, yet the city receives less than 10 cents on a dollar in return.
“We do not have the voting power,” said Troiano, referring to numbers of year-round residents compared to the summer season. Troiano reminded Lions Center residents that Wildwood cannot be compared to North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.
“We’re a big Italian kitchen,” Troiano said, using a house analogy to explain Wildwood’s function.
Gateway Project
Another aspect of the master plan is the city “gateway” entrance on Rio Grande Avenue. Five lanes instead of two will aid to increase traffic flow, and a new sign will welcome visitors.
Icons such as beach balls and other Doo-Wop emblems will weave a cohesive theme into Wildwood as part of that plan. A pump station is needed to pump rain and floodwater back to the ocean.
According to Troiano, construction is set to begin October 2018 with a finish date in spring of 2019.
A potential parking garage is also a goal, complete with stores and a movie theater.
Rehab Fox Park
Rehabilitating Fox Park will help return the park to its original function as a playground and recreational space.
By relocating events to the Byrne Plaza, Fox Park will have a softball field, two pickle-ball courts, and tennis court as a source of “continual development” for sports events.
Reconstructing Memory Lane and Vietnam memorial into a “state of the art memorial” encompasses another aspect of Troiano’s vision. Byrne Plaza will offer a bandstand; host the farmer’s market, Shakespeare in the park, and other special events, bringing residents and guests downtown.
Bring Back Memories
“We’re trying to bring back some of those old-time memories,” Troiano explained.
The Herald contacted Steven Booy of Planning and Zoning for more information on the master plan. Booy declined to comment until more details are in place and can be made public.
Commissioner Peter Byron emphasized that the master plan is evolving and not all aspects have been approved by Planning and Zoning.
