COMMISSIONERS SAY SCHOOL BUDGET
MUST BE CUT BY $319,646
WILDWOOD — After Wildwood voters rejected the proposed school budget by a vote of 212 to 90, pursuant to state statute the budget was presented to the City’s governing body for review.
At a special meeting on Tuesday night, May 18, City Commission confirmed that $319,646 should be cut from the school budget. That meeting is available on the City’s video site, www.wwnj.us
The cuts proposed by the Wildwood Public Schools and approved last night are included in Exhibit “A” which is referred to in the Resolution, a copy of which is enclosed with this release.
While the Commissioners’ decision can be appealed by the Wildwood School District, whether the District will file such an appeal is as yet undetermined.
“We are committed to assisting administrators to determine how best to comply with the voters’ directive, while still maintaining the high quality of education that residents expect,” said Commissioner Al Brannen.
Mayor DeMarzo stated,”We continue to stay supportive of our district and the service it provides to our community, but after the public rejected the budget and the school was unable to come to an agreement within its own organization, the city was left with few choices.”
The school board will decide tonight whether to adopt specific cuts proposed by the Commissioners, or to determine their own cuts.
