Wildwood Introduces Use-It-or-Lose-It Taxi Measure

By Joe Hart

WILDWOOD — It should not be hard to hail a cab during the summer season this year.
At its March 10 meeting, City Commission introduced an amended ordinance that requires all 21 taxicabs in the city to be actively picking up and dropping off Wildwood residents and visitors for at least five months out of the year.
Those cabs not active from May 1 through Sept. 30 face reassignment.
“The governing body, after hearing comments of taxi cab owners, licensees and others on multiple occasions in 2009 and at other times has found that twenty-one taxicabs is the proper number to provide for service to the City of Wildwood if all are in use,” the ordinance stated.
“During the time period between May 1 and Sept. 30 inclusive, in each year, each license is required to be active or it shall be rescinded and then issued to another taxicab owner through the Board of Commissioners or another city representative who may be designated by resolution.”
What does active mean?
“Active use shall be deemed to mean that such license is assigned to a specific taxicab, in use on the public streets, providing transportation to and accepting fares from the general public,” the ordinance stated.
“Any license determined not in such active use and operation as of, or after, May 1 in any year shall be reassigned. Such assignment shall be made to the next owner on a waiting list maintained for this purpose.”
Mayor Gary DeMarzo said he worked with members of the local taxi companies in drafting this ordinance.
