Wildwood Funds Flood Pumps, Beach Equipment

By Joe Hart

WILDWOOD — City Commission approved a $327,500 funding measure on April 14 that would help keep the city’s beaches clean and its streets dry.
Administrator Richard Deaney explained that the funds would be used to purchase three flood pumps, a beach cleaning sand rake and a new tractor for the Public Works Department.
Mayor Gary DeMarzo said one of the flood pumps was new and the other two were used. He said the pumps were to be located at Magnolia, Tacony and Leaming avenues to help reduce floodwaters in those areas during heavy rains.
DeMarzo noted that the city had only one sand rake and could not continue during the busy summer season without another. He said the new tractor would cost $145,000 and replaces one with a broken axle. The new tractor is the same model used in North Wildwood.
Commissioner Edward Harshaw, who oversees public works, said the new tractor was a “multiuse” piece of equipment that would be used to pull the sand rake in the summer and plow snow in the winter.
Harshaw said the tractors used on the beach, which have a life expectancy of 20 years, were all over 30 years old.
Deaney noted that the funding was being re-appropriated from previously funded capital ordinances in which unused money was left over from other projects.
“There is no new debt being associated with this bond ordinance,” Deaney said.
“The objective of the commissioners has been until such time as there is an operating budget in place there’s no intention here to create any new debt by any funding ordinances,” he added.
