WILDWOOD – Wildwood Fire Company No. 1 was recently awarded a grant of $63,900 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development (USDA-RD) for the purchase of personal protective gear and equipment for firefighters, according to a release by Chief Daniel Speigel Sept. 7.
“We are appreciative of USDA-RD’s award and very pleased that our application was so favorably received,” stated Speigel. “This money will allow us ensure that our firefighters have the equipment and gear they need to keep themselves safe while they work to protect people and property throughout the city.”
The money comes from USDA-RD’s Economic Impact Initiative (EII) program — a competitive funding opportunity that, according to USDA, assists in the development of key community facilities that provide “an essential service to the local community, is needed for the orderly development of the community, and serves a primarily rural area.”
Projects related to public health and safety, such as Wildwood Fire Co. No. 1’s, are given priority. The fire company’s successful application was written by Triad Associates of Vineland, a community and economic development firm.
The $64,000 awarded to the Wildwood Fire Company will be supplemented by a local match of $52,300.
Under the EII award, the fire company will purchase turn-out gear, (coats and pants), Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) cylinders for firefighters, and a compressor for filling the SCBA units.
“Wildwood has long been committed to ensuring the safety of our firefighters and the public we serve,” continued Speigel. “This EII award from USDA is a continuation of that commitment.”
